We finalized and resubmitted the revised version of Project-1, incorporating all the feedback and corrections from the professor. With that complete, our attention shifted fully to Project-2. We held a thorough discussion with the professor to better understand the complexities and critical elements of the upcoming project. This included clearing up doubts, refining our objectives, and outlining the next steps to ensure a more effective execution of Project-2.
Week-9
After reviewing our Project-1 submission, the professor pointed out that our group had missed addressing some important aspects. These may have included gaps in logic, insufficient data support, or a lack of clarity in presenting results. In response, we arranged a focused meeting with the professor to understand these issues better. With their guidance, we identified the necessary revisions and began working on an improved version of the project. This session was especially helpful in aligning our work with academic expectations.
Week-8
Today’s class involved student presentations on the progress of Project-2. These updates included an overview of project goals, chosen methodologies, initial data insights, and current challenges. After each presentation, the class and the professor provided feedback and posed questions, prompting thoughtful discussion and critique. This interaction not only offered helpful suggestions to the presenters but also gave the rest of us valuable insights to strengthen our own project development.
Week-7
This was the first class after spring break, and we returned with renewed focus. The session centered on beginning Project-2, particularly the selection and assessment of appropriate datasets. We engaged in a meaningful discussion on various potential data sources, evaluating their quality, relevance, accessibility, and suitability for analysis. Our group shared initial ideas about the datasets we were considering, and we received constructive feedback from both the professor and classmates to guide our decision-making process.
Week-6
In this session, we revisited the development of Project-1 and critically analyzed the issues encountered during its creation. Each group shared the difficulties they faced, such as problems with data accuracy, research constraints, or flaws in their methodology. Our group contributed by discussing our observations and presenting our approach to the professor and classmates. We emphasized the areas needing improvement and explained the reasoning behind our project design. The professor’s feedback shed light on key elements we had previously missed, helping us understand how to enhance our work moving forward.
Week-5
Today, our classmate Mahnoor gave a presentation where she shared her insights on the percentage of people shot in a specific county. She examined patterns in the data, highlighting how these incidents have persisted over time. Her analysis offered valuable perspectives on trends and possible contributing factors.
Week-4
Today, we covered key statistical concepts, including standard deviation and the standard normal distribution. We also had an insightful discussion on inference-based questions, particularly examining comparisons across various demographics such as age and race. This discussion enhanced our understanding of how statistical inferences are used to analyze and interpret data effectively.
Project 1: Washington Post police shootings data
1. What percentage of the individuals involved in these incidents were reported to have shown signs of mental illness? How might this information impact police training and response protocols?
2. Body cameras were not consistently utilized in the incidents recorded in early 2015. How might the subsequent widespread adoption of body cameras affect our understanding of similar incidents today?
3. The circumstances surrounding these incidents vary, including situations where individuals were fleeing, either on foot or by car, or not fleeing. How might these different scenarios influence police decision-making processes, and what does the data suggest about this?
Week-2
Lecturer-1@ 21 Jan 2025
On the first day, we had a great introduction with our professor Mr Garry Davis about the course and its outcomes. He guided us how to create an WordPress account where we can write and post our blogs , also gave us excel sheet with data from the Washington post about the mass shootings and the people who were killed all over from the world.
